Can you believe this ornate fountain almost ended up somewhere else entirely? The James Martin Fountain, right before your eyes, was originally placed outside Langside Halls. Now it stands proudly near the People’s Palace in Glasgow Green. The James Martin Fountain was erected in 1893. It honors James Martin, a local bailie (a senior councillor) who lived from 1815 to 1892. He was known for his opposition to the council’s development plans on Woodlands Hill. These plans aimed to create expensive homes for the wealthy, while the East End suffered from appalling housing conditions. The James Martin Fountain is a testament to his commitment to the people. The fountain itself is a stunning example of Glasgow’s renowned ironwork. It was crafted in the Saracen Foundry of Walter Macfarlane in Possilpark. Its Moorish design is incredibly detailed. Look closely at the city’s coat of arms, the flowers, birds, lions, and other fantastical creatures decorating the structure. The James Martin Fountain originally had a portrait bust of Bailie Martin on top. Sadly, this was removed in 1974 for safekeeping and has since been lost. Despite years of neglect, the James Martin Fountain underwent a beautiful restoration as part of Glasgow Green’s revitalization. It stands today as a symbol of both artistry and social conscience.
