This simple bronze plaque, attached to a pole, tells a tale of incredible daring, espionage, and ultimately, tragedy. James J. Andrews was a civilian spy for the Union during the Civil War. He is best known for his audacious plan to disrupt Confederate supply lines – the Great Locomotive Chase. Andrews and his team of volunteers aimed to steal a train in Georgia and drive it north, destroying tracks and telegraph lines along the way. Imagine the scene: men disguised in civilian clothes, boarding a train in Marietta, Georgia, their hearts pounding with a mixture of fear and exhilaration. At Big Shanty, while passengers disembarked for breakfast, they saw their chance. They uncoupled the locomotive, named “The General”, and steamed north, thinking they could cripple the Confederate supply lines. The chase was on! Andrews and his men raced towards Chattanooga, pursued relentlessly by determined Confederates. They damaged tracks and cut telegraph wires, hoping to delay their pursuers, but their luck ran out near Ringgold, Georgia. The General ran out of steam, and the raiders were captured. Andrews was condemned as a spy and hanged in Atlanta at the age of 33. The James J. Andrews Plaque stands as a reminder of his audacious plan, his courage, and the sacrifices made during the tumultuous years of the Civil War.
