Imagine a time when Las Vegas was known as the Mississippi of the West. James Gay Park stands as a testament to a man who helped change that. This park is named after James Arthur “Jimmy” Gay III. He was a civil rights leader. He broke color barriers in Las Vegas.

James Gay III moved to Las Vegas in 1947. His wife needed a better climate for her health. Though college-educated and an athlete, he struggled to find work. He eventually became a cook. Later, he became the director of the Jefferson Recreation Center. It was the first recreation center in Las Vegas.

Did you know that James Gay also became the first black casino executive? He worked as the director of communications at the Sands Hotel. This was a time when black people were not allowed through the front doors. Yet, Gay’s winning personality changed minds. His friendships with stars like Nat King Cole and the Rat Pack opened doors.

James Gay helped lead the historic meeting at the Moulin Rouge. This resulted in the desegregation of Las Vegas casinos. The inscription outlining Gay’s life and achievements are on the dignity columbarium.

James Gay’s son, Philip Gay, recalled his father’s calm demeanor. Despite the discrimination he faced, he remained positive. He inspired children in athletics. He also worked multiple jobs.

In 1978, the city honored him by naming this park after him. James Gay Park at Washington Avenue and D Street. The park closed for a while but has since reopened.

The park features an urban farm. MGM Resorts International donated $500000 for this project. It addresses food scarcity in the Historic Westside. The urban farm grows fresh produce year-round. It provides healthy food options for the community.

Las Vegas officials hope this farm will revolutionize food access. It is a public-private partnership. The farm offers free food for SNAP beneficiaries. Other residents receive discounts. The park serves as a place for community gatherings. It also provides cultural and educational programming.

James Gay III was a member of the NAACP. He was active in local politics. He served on the Nevada Democratic Central Committee. He was also on the executive board of Culinary Union Local 226. The University of Nevada Board of Regents named him a Distinguished Nevadan in 1988. He was the Jaycees’ Man of the Year in 1952.

So, as you stroll through James Gay Park, remember the legacy of this remarkable man. He was a pioneer. He was a leader. He helped make Las Vegas a better place for everyone. His smile and dedication changed a city.
