Gazing upon the grandeur of Jama Masjid Al Shams, one might hear whispers of its remarkable journey. Jama Masjid Al Shams wasn’t always the majestic structure we see today. It began humbly in 1979, amidst the marshes and mangroves of Mira Road. This area, once a desolate landscape, now thrives with a vibrant community. The mosque’s foundation stone was laid by two unlikely allies: Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray and Indian Union Muslim League President G. M. Banatwala. The original mosque was a modest affair. However, it was destined for greater things. Between 1995 and 1997, Jama Masjid Al Shams underwent its first expansion. This expansion catered to the burgeoning Muslim population of Nayanagar. Then, in 2020, a dramatic transformation began. Inspired by the magnificent mosques of Madina and other Muslim nations, Jama Masjid Al Shams was reborn. The renovation, costing Rs 5 crores, was completed in 2022. Today, it stands as the largest mosque in Maharashtra. It can accommodate 5,000 worshippers at once. The mosque’s entrance is a magnificent 20-foot-tall Burma Teakwood door, now adorned with shimmering gold leaf. A Ferrari tensile shed covers the 3,000 sq. ft. courtyard, reflecting the sun’s heat and keeping the space cool. Inside, a breathtaking 80-foot high central dome dominates the skyline, accompanied by a 108-foot minaret, its gold-plated cupola gleaming in the sunlight. The mosque’s interior is an oasis of tranquility. German yellow lights highlight the intricate gold leaf engravings. The 99 names of Allah and Prophet Mohammed, along with their meanings, are inscribed in gold. Modern technology blends seamlessly with tradition. A 100-unit solar power station provides clean energy. An advanced sound system broadcasts the azaan, the call to prayer, in a melodious and soothing manner. The muezzins have undergone special training to ensure the azaan is both beautiful and reverent. The lighting system, imported from the USA, boasts 900 unique patterns, adding a touch of modern artistry to the sacred space. Jama Masjid Al Shams is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the vision and dedication of the Hussain family, who funded the entire project without soliciting donations. It’s a beacon of hope and unity, a place where tradition and modernity intertwine. It is a symbol of the enduring power of faith.
