In the heart of Kuala Lumpur, nestled amidst the bustling city, stands the Jalan Imbi Chapel. This unassuming building holds a rich history, intertwined with the growth of Christianity in Malaysia. Jalan Imbi Chapel, often called JIC, isn’t your typical ornate church. It’s a simple structure, reflecting the brethren’s belief in focusing on the word of God rather than elaborate symbolism. The history of Jalan Imbi Chapel began long before its current location. In 1891, missionaries from Plymouth, England, arrived in Kuala Lumpur and established the Bluff Road Gospel Hall in 1897. The congregation grew, leading to the construction of the Venning Road Gospel Hall in 1922. During World War II, many missionaries, including Mr. David Angus, endured imprisonment by the Japanese. Mr. Angus emerged from this experience with a deeper understanding of the diverse people he served. Jalan Imbi Chapel found its home on Jalan Imbi in 1962. The government acquired the Venning Road site to build the National Mosque and offered the Imbi Road location, near the Bintang Palace nightclub, as a replacement. The original Jalan Imbi Chapel had a seating capacity of 300. An auxiliary building housed a library, recreation room, and kitchen, all connected to the main hall by sheltered walkways. The church expanded further in the 1970s and 1980s, with conferences and outreach programs strengthening the community. JIC played a role in the establishment of other assemblies in the Klang Valley, including those in Ampang, Melawati, and Cheras. In 2001, the government took over the Bukit Bintang Girls’ School, which had strong ties to the chapel, eventually demolishing it for commercial development. This prompted the need for more space at JIC, leading to a four-story extension completed in 2004. This extension houses a multi-purpose hall, library, and even a guest apartment. Today, Jalan Imbi Chapel continues to serve a vibrant congregation of over 250 members. They engage in gospel outreach, Bible studies, and fellowship, upholding the scriptures and New Testament patterns. A smaller Chinese-speaking assembly also thrives within JIC. Jalan Imbi Chapel’s journey reflects resilience, adaptation, and a commitment to serving the community.
