For much of the 20th century, Al Jalali Fort served a darker purpose. It was Oman’s main prison, housing up to 200 inmates. Some were political prisoners, captured during the Jebel Akhdar War and the Dhofar Rebellion. Others were ordinary criminals. The fort’s isolation and imposing walls made it an ideal location for a prison, but conditions were reportedly harsh.

Today, Al Jalali Fort has been beautifully restored and transformed into a private museum. It holds a fascinating collection of Omani artifacts, including cannons, muskets, maps, rugs, and other treasures. The museum is only accessible to visiting dignitaries, adding to its mystique. The fort’s conversion into a museum represents a significant shift. It acknowledges its historical importance while showcasing Oman’s rich cultural heritage.
