The Jakobuskirche in Mannheim, a beacon of faith for many years, now stands silent. The Jakobuskirche, a Protestant church, was built between 1965 and 1969 in the Sandhofen district of Mannheim. It served as a place of worship until 2010, when it was closed for public use. After World War II, the population of Sandhofen grew rapidly due to new housing developments. The Protestant community grew too, and in 1959, a new parish was established. The foundation stone for the Jakobuskirche was laid on Reformation Day in 1965, and the church was dedicated in April 1969 by then Bishop Hans-Wolfgang Heidland. It was designed by Mannheim architect Wolfgang Handreck. The original exposed concrete was later painted over during renovations in 1992. The Jakobuskirche sits on an asymmetrical base. Its narrow, elongated windows were designed by Helmut Lander from Darmstadt, who also designed the altarpiece from 1988. It depicts Christ rising from the tomb, breaking the chains of death. In 1992, the northern and southern facades received large-scale paintings from the workshop of Sandhofen artist Willi Wernz. The entrance was redesigned in 1995/1996 based on a design by Helmut Lander, referring to Heavenly Jerusalem and its twelve gates. The Jakobuskirche no longer serves its original purpose. A time of great social and political change, the 1960s saw the emergence of innovative architectural designs throughout Germany. The Jakobuskirche is a testament to the architectural style of the time. Today, the building stands as a silent reminder of the times that have passed. Though no longer used for religious services, it remains a notable landmark in the Sandhofen district.
