What secrets lie beneath the modern facade of the Jakobuskirche? The Jakobuskirche stands as a testament to Münster’s ever-evolving architectural landscape. Completed in 1986, this modern church boasts a distinctive design. The church’s square-shaped sanctuary, topped with a pyramid-like roof, contrasts sharply with the traditional buildings nearby. A slender, freestanding tower, reminiscent of an Italian campanile, houses a quartet of small bells. These bells chime sweetly, reminding the community of the church’s presence. Inside the Jakobuskirche, a special surprise awaits music lovers. A 2015 addition, the church organ, crafted by Bartelt Immer, possesses a unique feature. Among its 17 registers lies the “Muschelstern”, translating to “seashell star”. This special effect register, designed to mimic the sound of a glockenspiel, adds a whimsical touch to the church’s soundscape. The Jakobuskirche’s modern design might surprise some. It serves as a reminder that even amidst a backdrop of historic grandeur, Münster embraces the new and unexpected.
