Did the stones of Jakobskirche ever imagine cradling a congregation of Calvinists within Frankfurt’s Lutheran embrace? Jakobskirche, nestled in Bockenheim, whispers tales from the 14th century. Its first whispers date back to 1365, as a modest daughter of Frankfurt’s Bartholomäustift. Monks from St. Jakob Monastery in Mainz, skilled in the late Gothic style, raised its walls upon an ancient Frankish burial ground. Jakobskirche weathered the storms of reformation. Bockenheim fell under the sway of the Counts of Hanau-Münzenberg in 1434. They embraced the Reformation in 1523 and later converted to Calvinism in 1595. Imagine Frankfurt, a staunch Lutheran city. Calvinists found it difficult to establish their own sanctuaries. Jakobskirche became a haven, offering its space from 1608 until Frankfurt’s German and French Reformed Churches finally opened their doors between 1787 and 1790. Jakobskirche became a symbol of unity. In 1818, the congregation adopted the Hanauer Union. Lutherans and Calvinists, once separated by doctrine, joined hands as one united congregation. Jakobskirche proudly wore its scars. It received a significant facelift by the close of the 18th century. Its distinctive tower, with its solid square base, was added in 1853. Even after Bockenheim became part of Frankfurt in 1895, Jakobskirche remained under Kassel’s consistorial district. This district represented a unique blend of Lutheran, Reformed, and united congregations. Bockenheim’s booming population led to the construction of another church, the Markuskirche, between 1909 and 1912. Jakobskirche’s walls couldn’t withstand the ravages of war. In September 1944, air raids left the church a skeleton of its former self. Only its outer walls survived. But Jakobskirche was reborn. Between 1954 and 1957, it rose from the ashes, a testament to resilience. Inside, admire Charles Crodel’s breathtaking stained glass. The vibrant colors and intricate details depict scenes from the life of St. James, adding layers of beauty and meaning to Jakobskirche. Jakobskirche continues to evolve. The St. Jakobs and Markus congregations reunited in 1997, forming the Evangelische Gemeinde Bockenheim. Today, Jakobskirche stands as the sole place of worship for this community. Its adjoining community center, added during renovations between 2003 and 2005, breathes new life into this historic space.
