Can you imagine that in 1965, the first Jain immigrants gathered in Manhattan. These meetings marked the genesis of the Jain Samaj of USA.
The Jain Samaj of USA stands as a testament to unity. It embodies diversity within New York’s Jain community. Registered in 1976, it is America’s first Jain center. For years, the community lacked a dedicated worship space. That changed in 1981 with the purchase of their first temple in Queens.
In 2005, the Jain Samaj of USA celebrated a significant milestone. The Pratishta Mahotsav marked the inauguration of their new temple. This state-of-the-art facility replaced the original building. The temple is located at 43-11 Ithaca St, Elmhurst. The Jain Samaj of USA received an award. It was named “Best Religious Building” in Queens for 2005.
The JCA NY Temple complex spans 16,625 square feet. The temple is four stories high with a cellar. Its total height reaches 66 feet 5 inches with the Kalash. The Shikhar stands at 24 feet 1 inch. The Kalash adds another 2 feet 9 inches. The temple can host over 500 people. Two stairways and an elevator provide easy access.
The Jain Samaj of USA unites diverse Jain traditions. Each tradition has its own worship space. This fosters harmony and preserves unique identities. The cellar is a multipurpose hall. It includes a youth center and an art gallery. The first floor features a reception center. It also offers a senior center seating area.
The second floor houses the Shri Mahavir Swami Temple. It follows the Shwetambar tradition. There is also a large Upashraya for the Sthanakvasi tradition. The Shri Mahavir Swami Temple has a Main Garbha Griha. This includes a Ghummat, Kalash, and Dhwaja.
The third floor contains the Sri Adinath Temple. It represents the Digambar tradition. The Shrimad Rajchandra Meditation Hall and a library are also here. The Shri Adinath Temple features three Shikhars, Kalash, and Dhwaja.
The fourth floor houses the Dadawadi Temple. It features the Asthapad Maha Tirth and a dining hall. The Asthapad Maha Tirth is made of crystal stone. All 24 idols are carved from precious gemstones.
Since its opening in 2005, the Jain Samaj of USA has seen increased youth involvement. It serves as a model. It exemplifies Jain unity within diverse traditions. It embodies the Jain principle of Anekantvad. The temple opens daily from 6:30 am to 8:00 pm Eastern Time. Daily Arti is held from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm Eastern Time.
