Agra itself boasts a long history. Some believe it was part of Emperor Ashok’s domain around 206 to 166 BC. However solid proof from that time is scarce. The land may have changed dramatically due to earthquakes and natural disasters.
Fast forward to the 15th century. Bahlol Lodi tried to rebuild Agra. His son Sikander Lodi made it his capital. A significant moment for the Jain community arrived in Vikram year 1639. Acharya Vijayhirsurishvarji, a Jain scholar, visited Agra. He oversaw the construction and dedication of many Jain temples.
The Jain Mandir houses an extraordinary idol. It is Bhagawan Chintamani Parshvanath. The idol is crafted from a precious stone called yasav. It was installed with great fanfare in 1639 of the Vikram era.
Emperor Akbar deeply respected Acharya Hirvijaysuri. Akbar bestowed upon him the title Jagatguru meaning world teacher. He also gifted him a priceless library. This collection can still be seen today. Akbar even issued orders promoting Jain virtues like stopping animal slaughter.
Many wealthy merchants in Akbar’s court built Jina temples here. These included Shri Mansingh, Shri Chandrapal and Shri Heeranand Seth. They engaged in numerous religious activities. There are twelve Svetambar temples and some Digambar temples in Agra. A large Dadawadi of Acharya Hirvijaysurishrarji exists outside the city.
Inside the Jain Mandir you will find more than one stunning idol. In the assembly hall near the chowk is a miraculous black idol of Bhagawan Shitalanath. Another extraordinary idol was found in a mosque.
