On a crisp autumn day in 1732, a stag burst from the dense foliage of the Parforceheide, sixteen pathways radiating out like a star. This, my friends, is where we find Jagdschloss Stern, nestled at the heart of it all. King Frederick William I, known as the Soldier King, desired a simple retreat from the rigors of court life. He chose this unique spot, not for opulent displays, but for the thrill of the hunt. Jagdschloss Stern, meaning “Star Hunting Lodge”, perfectly captures its location. The lodge itself reflects the king’s practical nature. It resembles a modest Dutch townhouse. Step inside, and you’ll find the wood-paneled hall almost exactly as it was in the king’s time. Imagine the boisterous gatherings after a successful hunt, the room filled with the aroma of roasted game and the king’s booming laughter. Adorning the walls are antlers, a testament to the king’s hunting prowess, including those of “Big Hans”, a magnificent stag from the royal hunting grounds. Paintings depict scenes of the hunt, freezing moments of royal pursuit in time. Beyond the hall, explore the king’s simple bedchamber, the adjutant’s room, and the white-tiled kitchen. Jagdschloss Stern has miraculously survived centuries of change, remaining virtually untouched. The surrounding complex still includes the caretaker’s house, the stables, and other outbuildings, all constructed alongside the lodge. Even the historical oven, restored in 2011, stands ready to bake bread, just as it did centuries ago. Though the modern world encroaches with its canals, railways, and bustling city, Jagdschloss Stern persists. It serves as a quiet reminder of a time when kings pursued simpler pleasures amidst the whispering trees of the Parforceheide.
