Jagadeeshwara Temple

Have you ever wondered what a Buddhist stupa, a quote from the Quran, and a Hindu deity have in common? Here at the Jagadeeshwara Temple in Mumbai, they coexist in harmony. This unique temple, consecrated in 1968, sits atop a small hill in Powai. The entrance, known as the Jagadwara, is a marvel in itself. Modeled after the Sanchi Stupa, its pillars are adorned with intricate carvings depicting stories from the Shiva Purana. Look closely, and you’ll find an inscription from the Quran on the second beam: “Through me you stand in the presence of the Lord of the Universe.” A large bell hangs from the third beam, completing this symbolic fusion of cultures. Inside, the serene white marble deity of Lord Jagadeeshwara sits in a meditative pose. To his right, you’ll find Lord Krishna as Venugopal. To his left is Mother Ganga, represented by a pot of Ganges water. A Shiva Lingam lies at the heart of the sanctum sanctorum, where daily rituals are performed. In the surrounding corridor, a black stone Ganesha sits in quiet contemplation. Nandi, Lord Shiva’s loyal vahana, guards the Wish Pond, where devotees toss coins and whisper their hopes. The temple’s dome is a three-part structure, a square, an octagon, and a circle. The circle symbolizes the Shiva Lingam, the octagon represents the five elements and three subtle elements of mind, intellect, and ego. Outside, near the Jagadwara, a metal lamp sits atop a tortoise, symbolizing the withdrawal of the mind from worldly distractions. The Jagadeeshwara Temple is more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to the rich tapestry of Indian culture and a haven of peace in the bustling city of Mumbai.
