Stepping back in time, imagine Seoul in 1446. Prince Yeongung, son of the illustrious King Sejong the Great, resided right here, where the Jaeyong Museum now stands. This very ground held deep significance, not only as a royal residence but also as the place where King Sejong, the revered inventor of the Korean alphabet, drew his last breath. The Jaeyong Museum itself isn’t directly connected to these figures, but its location is steeped in this royal history. Centuries later, towards the end of the Joseon Dynasty, this auspicious site was chosen by King Gojong to build the Andong royal villa. It served as a place for ritual ceremonies for his son, Sunjong. The Jaeyong Museum, built much later, echoes this rich past, although its exhibits focus on a different era. Within the walls of the Jaeyong Museum, you won’t find artifacts from the Joseon Dynasty. Instead, over 20,000 craft pieces and materials from various periods are on display. From historical crafts to modern and local creations, the museum offers a diverse range. Even children have a dedicated space with interactive workshops. While you won’t find relics of King Sejong or Prince Yeongung here, visiting the Jaeyong Museum offers a unique connection to the past. As you explore its galleries, remember you’re walking in the footsteps of royalty, on land that witnessed pivotal moments in Korean history.
