Across the street from the Hotel Am Jägertor stands its namesake, the Jägertor. This gate is more than just an entryway. It’s a portal to Potsdam’s rich history. The Jägertor, or Hunter’s Gate, proudly holds the title of Potsdam’s oldest surviving city gate. Erected in 1733, the Jägertor was designed by Peter von Gayette. Its name originates from the nearby Royal Hunters Yard. This gate once led to the Elector’s pheasant hatchery.

The Jägertor, a part of Potsdam’s excise wall, wasn’t primarily designed for defense. Its main purpose was to control smuggling and prevent soldiers from deserting. The angled intersection of Lindenstrasse and the former city wall dictated the gate’s angled construction. Imagine the flow of goods and people passing under this archway. Envision soldiers nervously eyeing the gate, contemplating their loyalties.

In 1869, the city wall was demolished. This left the Jägertor as a freestanding structure. Notice its Tuscan-style pillars and the crowning sculptures. A stag, surrounded by hunting dogs and flanked by flaming grenades, sits atop the gate. This striking scene symbolizes the gate’s connection to the Jagerhof and its military function. The architrave and crown are made of sandstone. The rusticated pillars consist of plastered brickwork.

Court painter Dismar Degen immortalized the Jägertor’s original setting in an oil painting. This painting, now owned by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg Foundation, interestingly exaggerates the gate’s size. It makes the Jägertor appear much more imposing than it actually is.

Today, the Jägertor graces the promenade that follows the former city wall’s path. It’s a focal point on Lindenstrasse, showcasing the contrast between the dense baroque city to the south and the open villa developments to the north. The Jägertor is a survivor, a witness to centuries of change. It whispers tales of royal hunts, military life, and the ebb and flow of a city’s growth. As you stand before the Jägertor, let its history resonate within you, connecting you to the spirit of Potsdam.
