In 1907, a vision became reality. Jägersro, Sweden’s oldest stationary horse racing track, opened its gates. Jägersro, nestled in the Husie borough of Malmö, has echoed with the thunder of hooves for over a century. The inaugural race? A thrilling contest of speed featuring a buggy, a four-wheeled carriage. Jägersro quickly evolved. It became a premier horse racing venue, hosting both harness racing and thoroughbred racing. It’s the oldest facility of its kind in Sweden. Today, Jägersro stands as Southern Sweden’s largest facility for these exhilarating sports. This isn’t just a place for seasoned racers. Jägersro also nurtures future generations of equestrian talent. The facility offers training programs for children, youth, and adults in both trotting and galloping. Jägersro also hosts a range of activities beyond racing. From summer camps to corporate races and educational programs, there’s something for everyone. Imagine the excitement each year as Jägersro hosts prestigious races like the Hugo Åbergs Memorial and the Swedish Trotting Derby. The Swedish Derby, a highlight of the racing calendar, has been held here since 1928. This prestigious race for four-year-old Swedish-bred trotting horses takes place on the first Sunday of September. The winning team receives the coveted lion-yellow Derby blazer, a symbol of their victory. But Jägersro is more than just horses. The surrounding area is alive with activity. Nearby stands the Jägersro Center, Scandinavia’s first hypermarket, which originally opened in 1962 as Wessels. The neighborhood also houses the Malmö Mosque and the Jägershills allotment area. Jägersro’s story is one of evolution and adaptation. Soon, the horse racing track will move eastward, opening up a significant area for urban development. A new chapter will begin for Jägersro, with plans for housing, offices, and community spaces. The legacy of Jägersro, however, will continue to resonate, a testament to its rich history and enduring spirit.
