Two million books. Can you imagine? That’s how many volumes are housed within these walls. This is the Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum.

The Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum isn’t just a library. It’s a monument to scholarship a testament to the enduring legacy of the Brothers Grimm. Opened in 2009 this ten-story building houses the central library of Humboldt University. It also incorporates the university’s computer and media services.

Before this impressive structure existed the university library was spread across numerous locations. This was inefficient. The university sought a solution. The decision was made to centralize. Twelve branch libraries were consolidated into this one impressive building. The remaining branches stayed put however. This huge project took years. The first preparatory construction measures began in late 2005. The official groundbreaking was even later on August 22 2006.

Designed by Swiss architect Max Dudler the Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum is a sight to behold. Its impressive main reading room stretches 70 meters long 12 meters wide and 20 meters high. It’s truly unique in its scale and design. The building’s total usable area is an impressive 20296 square meters.

However this architectural marvel wasn’t without its critics. The cloakroom and locker area came under fire. Its location in the basement its poor signage and initial lack of lockers were heavily criticized. Even today accessing it can be tricky. It’s a bit of a maze. But additional lockers were added in the entrance hall. This solved the problem somewhat. The architect’s vision while praised aesthetically by some also clashed with practical usability concerns voiced by its users. Acoustics traffic flow and climate control also drew criticism.

Despite these complaints the Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum has received numerous awards. It was a recipient of the BDA-Preis Berlin 2009 the Architekturpreis Berlin 2009 and the Access City Award for accessibility in 2013.

The Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum is more than just a place to borrow books. It’s a living archive a hub for intellectual discovery a symbol of Berlin’s commitment to learning. It represents the culmination of years of planning and a significant investment. It stands as a testament to the power of knowledge and the ongoing importance of libraries in our world. A truly impressive place.
