Did you ever imagine a park built upon a former creek bed? Here at Jackson Park, that’s exactly what happened. Jackson Park sits quietly just east of Orange Avenue. This 3.1-acre park offers a peaceful escape with its lush landscaping, inviting picnic area, and a vibrant playground. Jackson Park’s history is tied to the city’s water story. The land was originally acquired in 1903 by a private water company. It then became city property in 1911 with the formation of the Long Beach Water Department. Development of the park began in 1966 and was completed in 1968. Originally known as Jackson Street Park, it finally transitioned from the Water Department to Parks, Recreation and Marine in 2000. Interestingly, the park’s southern edge follows the path of a storm drain channel. This channel was once Jackson Creek. The park’s playground has seen its own share of history. It was redeveloped in 1996 using funds from the Los Angeles County Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Act of 1992. So as you enjoy the playground with its modern equipment, remember its past. Jackson Park is more than just green space. It represents a piece of Long Beach’s history. A testament to the changing landscape of the city, from creek to park.
