Jackson Heights United Methodist Church is located between 81st and 82nd streets on 35th Avenue. It is more than just a building. It is a vibrant part of this diverse neighborhood.

Let’s step back in time. The Queensboro Corporation planned Jackson Heights. As part of this plan, the Jackson Heights United Methodist Church was founded in 1919. By 1923, its doors officially opened.

Initially, it served European-American Protestants. Over time, Jackson Heights United Methodist Church evolved mirroring the changing neighborhood. It now stands as the most diverse church in Queens. Services are offered in Chinese Korean Spanish and English.

Reverend Austin Armistead led the church from 1974 to 1995. He is credited with this transformation. Before his arrival a Spanish-speaking service was turned down. Armistead envisioned a church reflecting its surroundings. He divided the church into four ministries.

Jackson Heights United Methodist Church became a hub. Many community groups found common ground within its walls. Ethnic associations LGBTQ organizations and groups like the Jackson Heights Beautification Group all gathered here.

During the 1990s Queens Gays and Lesbians United met here. This influential group supported local LGBT residents. They promoted gay visibility in the borough. In 1990 a City Council candidates night focused on LGBT issues. Over 100 people attended at the church.

The Community United Methodist Church co-sponsored an Interfaith AIDS Memorial Service in 1999. Christian Jewish Muslim and Wiccan clergy led the event. Panels from the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt were displayed. Another memorial service was held the following year.
