“Did you know that mountains can be more than just geological formations?” Today we are standing before Jabal Hanash. It holds stories of faith and revelation. While Jabal Hanash itself may not be directly mentioned in historical texts, nearby Jabal al-Nour holds a significant place in Islamic history.

Jabal al-Nour means Mountain of Light. It houses the Cave of Hira. The Prophet Muhammad is said to have received his first revelation there. The angel Jibra’il appeared to him. He delivered the first five verses of Surah Al-Alaq.

Imagine Muhammad seeking solitude on Jabal al-Nour. He often retreated to the cave for meditation. This was before his first revelation. He would spend a month each year in seclusion. He took provisions and fed the poor. Before returning home, he circumambulated the Kaaba seven times.

The ascent to the Cave of Hira is strenuous. It is a climb of about 640 meters. There are 1750 steps to the top. It can take one to three hours to reach the cave.

The cave itself is small. It is about 3.7 meters long and 1.6 meters wide. It is at a height of 270 meters on Jabal al-Nour. During the Hajj, thousands of visitors climb to see it daily. They want to see the place of the first revelation.

Jabal al-Nour has a unique appearance. Its summit looks like two mountains on top of each other. The cave faces the direction of the Kaaba. It is a place of isolation.

Before Islam, the Cave of Hira was of minor significance. Its name comes from “hira” meaning jewels. Muhammad had transcendental dreams before his first revelation. He saw signs of his prophethood. Stones in Mecca would greet him. These dreams lasted for six months.

Though Jabal Hanash is distinct from Jabal al-Nour, both mountains share this landscape. They invite contemplation. They remind us of the Prophet’s spiritual journey. The rugged terrain and the stark beauty of the desert. They echo the challenges and triumphs of faith.

Consider the journey to the Cave of Hira. Think about the Prophet’s dedication to seeking truth. Imagine the moment of revelation. The weight of those first verses. The beginning of Islam.

Jabal al-Nour stands as a reminder of that pivotal moment. It symbolizes the light of divine guidance. The message that spread from this mountain. It has shaped the lives of billions.

Mountains like Jabal Hanash and Jabal al-Nour offer more than just a physical challenge. They provide an opportunity for reflection. They allow us to connect with history. They invite us to contemplate the profound events that unfolded here. They inspire us to seek our own enlightenment. As we continue our journey, let us carry the light of Jabal al-Nour with us. Let its message of peace and guidance illuminate our path.
