Gazing up at Jabal ar Radi, can you sense the weight of history? This unassuming granodiorite hill, also known as Jabal ar-Rahmah, or Mountain of Mercy, holds a profound significance in Islam. Located just 20 kilometers southeast of Mecca, Jabal ar Radi rises approximately 70 meters, its peak reaching 454 meters above sea level. This is where, according to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad delivered his poignant Farewell Sermon, the Khutbat al-Wada, to his companions during his final Hajj. Imagine the scene: the Prophet standing upon this hill, his words echoing across the valley, carrying a message of unity and devotion. Jabal ar Radi is also believed to be the place where Adam and Eve reunited after their expulsion from Heaven, their forgiveness granted on this very spot, hence the name Mountain of Mercy. A pillar stands atop Jabal ar Radi, marking this sacred reunion. Each year, during the Hajj, Jabal ar Radi plays a central role. On the 9th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, known as the Day of Arafah, pilgrims journey from Mina to Arafat, the plain surrounding Jabal ar Radi. They spend the day in prayer and reflection, seeking forgiveness and invoking Allah’s mercy. The khutbah, or sermon, is delivered, and Zuhr and Asr prayers are offered together. As you stand here, before Jabal ar Radi, can you feel the echoes of prayers and sermons past? Can you imagine the countless pilgrims who have stood on this ground, their hearts filled with hope and devotion? Jabal ar Radi stands as a testament to faith, forgiveness, and the enduring power of history.
