“Jabal al Ahdab,” you say. It’s a small mountain, almost a hill really, but it’s a giant in the story of Mecca. Look at those imposing granite peaks surrounding you. They’ve stood watch over this city for centuries. Jabal al Ahdab, its name whispered in prayer, whispers stories of a time before the Prophet, a time before Islam, when this land was ruled by the gods of the ancient Arabs. This very mountain you see before you… right here, where the sun beats down so relentlessly, where the air smells ever so slightly salty, was said to have been the first mountain on earth. It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? The stories passed down through generations. Jabal al Ahdab was once named Al-Amin. Al-Amin, which means trustworthy, a fitting name for a mountain that held the sacred Black Stone, yes the same one that sits in the Kaaba, in a hidden chamber until the year of The Flood. Even without the Black Stone, the mountain has been witnessed to many stories. It was a place from which the Prophet Muhammad preached, it is said, so powerful was his voice that everyone in Mecca could hear him speak from this very mountain. The sacred valley below is bathed in the light reflected from this old, wise mountain. Jabal al Ahdab. One of the oldest formations in the region, a silent witness to history.
