“What lies beneath?” That’s the silent question J22 – Geology whispers.

J22 – Geology stands as a testament to our planet’s intricate story. It highlights Kuala Lumpur’s deep connection to the earth. It’s more than just a building at Universiti Malaya. It’s a gateway to understanding the very ground beneath our feet.

Kuala Lumpur’s geography is defined by the Klang Valley. It is a vast basin cradled by the Titiwangsa Mountains. Several minor ranges lie to the north and south. The Malacca Straits border it to the west. The city’s name, Kuala Lumpur, means “muddy confluence”. It sits where the Klang and Gombak Rivers meet, facing the Malacca Straits.

Kuala Lumpur owes its faster development to its location. It is on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. This area boasts wider flat land compared to the East Coast.

But the story of Kuala Lumpur’s geology goes deeper. For three years, the British Geological Survey (BGS) collaborated with the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG). Their goal was to weave geoscience into the city’s planning. This included the design, construction, and management of buildings and infrastructure.

Urban areas face constant pressure. Land is needed for many uses. Populations grow, demanding subsurface development. The subsurface is a complex environment. It offers resources but also poses hazards. Understanding these subsurface properties is key. It helps create cities that are safe, resilient, and sustainable.

A significant project was the creation of the first 3D geological model of Kuala Lumpur. It was called 3DKL. A consortium was formed. It included geoscience stakeholders from government, industry, and academia.

The 3DKL project digitized borehole logs. These logs came from site investigation reports. They were stored in a geospatial SQLite borehole database. QGIS software helped view and interpret the data. BGS Groundhog software generated cross-sections across model areas. Leapfrog software created a 3D model from boreholes and cross-sections.

Kuala Lumpur is rich in tin. However, the area is prone to flash floods. These are caused by thunderstorms and heavy rain. The city also experiences moderate pollution. Dust particles from forest fires in Sumatra are carried by wind. This creates a phenomenon known as haze.

J22 – Geology reminds us of the unseen forces shaping Kuala Lumpur. It shows how understanding the earth is vital. It contributes to a more sustainable and resilient city.
