In the vibrant tapestry of Galveston’s history, a solemn thread intertwines with the legacy of J. Levy & Bro. Plaque. Right here, amidst the bustling streets, stands a testament to their enduring impact on this island city. The J. Levy & Bro. Plaque, erected in 1992 by the Texas Historical Commission, marks the site of their funeral home. It’s a poignant reminder of two brothers who transitioned from lively livestock traders to compassionate caregivers of the departed.

Joseph and “Ben” Levy, arriving from Alsace, France, in the late 1860s, initially focused on horses. They supplied a Galveston rebuilding from the Civil War with horses, mules, wagons, and buggies. Yet, as fate would have it, their path took an unexpected turn. Around 1880, the Levy brothers recognized a growing need for funeral transportation. They procured a horse-drawn hearse, offering solace and dignity to grieving families. This act of empathy marked their shift towards becoming Galveston’s preeminent undertakers.

Their reputation was further solidified in the wake of the devastating 1900 hurricane. Ben Levy’s role in overseeing the overwhelming number of burials cemented their place in the community’s heart. The J. Levy & Bro. Plaque serves not just as a marker of their business but as a symbol of their enduring commitment to Galveston, a commitment that spanned a century and echoed through generations.
