Built in 1912, this beautiful home with its classical revival style was originally the residence of James Judson Carroll and his wife Lena. James Judson Carroll was a noted businessman and ornithologist. It is one of the last mansions built on Main Street, which was Houston’s most prestigious residential address for many decades. J J Carroll House stands on Courtlandt Place, a street that is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is considered a landmark in Texas because of its remarkable architecture and social history. The home features interior carvings by artist Peter Mansbendel. It also has two-story colossal columns and large windows on the principal facade. The Carrolls had three daughters, Frankie Maude, Mary Josephine, and Lena Carter.
