Pause here for a moment to reflect upon the Athens Memorial. This memorial is not just stone and inscription. It stands as a testament to sacrifice and remembrance.

The Athens Memorial resides within the Phaleron War Cemetery. It commemorates nearly 3,000 Commonwealth land force members. These brave souls lost their lives in Greece and Crete campaigns during 1941 and 1944-1945. They also perished in the Dodecanese Islands and Yugoslavia campaigns between 1943 and 1945. They have no known grave.

The Phaleron War Cemetery’s origin dates back to the Greek Civil War. In December 1944, the 4th Division chose this site as a burial ground. It was for Commonwealth casualties. Later, military authorities and the Greek Government agreed. This would be the main Second World War cemetery for mainland Greece.

Units worked together to gather graves. They came from battlefields, temporary military sites and civil cemeteries. This work ensured proper commemoration.

Within this cemetery lie 2,028 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War. Among these, 596 remain unidentified. Special memorials honor casualties. These individuals are known to be within certain grave groups. However their exact location is now unknown.

The Athens Memorial also features the Phaleron Cremation Memorial. It commemorates 74 men of the army of undivided India. They died during the Greek and Crete campaigns. Their religion required committal to fire.

In the cemetery’s northeast corner rests a plot. It holds graves of servicemen and civilians. They served in the Crimean War and later died in Greece. Originally, they were buried in the Anglo-French Crimean Cemetery. Those graves were moved in 1966.

Louis de Soissons designed both the Athens Memorial and Phaleron War Cemetery. Information panels detail the campaign’s history. They are available in both English and Greek. These panels are a reminder of the many nations involved.

Consider Augustus George Evans. He was of the Sherwood Foresters and Special Boat Service. He died on April 7th 1944 aged 23. Augustus was captured near the Isle of Rhodes. He and others were executed after torture. A memorial service honored them in 1992.

The Athens Memorial stands as a solemn place. It invites reflection on the cost of war. Remember the courage and sacrifice of those commemorated here.
