Whispers of transformation and community spirit echo around Ituzaingó. Ituzaingó is a barrio in Montevideo. It is more than just streets and buildings. It’s a testament to the city’s ongoing evolution.
Ituzaingó sits nestled among other vibrant neighborhoods. Castro Castellanos borders it to the southwest. Las Acacias is to the northwest. Jardines del Hipódromo lies to the northeast. Flor de Maroñas is to the southeast. Villa Española sits to the south of Ituzaingó.
But Ituzaingó is also defined by faith. The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and St. Rita stands here. It is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage sanctuary. Locals know it affectionately as the Maroñas church. People believe it’s a place for impossible requests.
Imagine the families who once lived where the double-lane Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga Avenue now runs. The Proyecto 7 Manzanas sought to improve the area. This project relocated around 400 families. This allowed for the expansion of the avenue. The goal was to boost the neighborhood. It aimed to improve connectivity with the Hipódromo Nacional de Maroñas.
Think back to a time when authorities handed over 50 new homes. These homes were part of the Proyecto 7 Manzanas. Some of these homes had special designs. They were for residents with disabilities.
Picture the joy of those families. They received keys to new homes. These homes offered a fresh start. This was thanks to collaborative efforts. The Ministerio de Economía y Finanzas and the Intendencia de Montevideo worked together.
The project covered about seven hectares. The aim was ambitious. It wanted to finalize the double lane of Larrañaga Avenue. It sought to relocate 400 families. It also wanted to improve public spaces. The project incorporated new facilities.
The initial phase focused on 215 relocations. These took place across six locations. This clearance paved the way for the avenue’s expansion. This expansion promised to inject new life into Ituzaingó. It would also greatly improve access to the national racetrack. New housing projects could also be developed along the widened road.
As you stand here in Ituzaingó, remember its story. It is a story of change. It is a story of faith. It is a story of community. It reflects Montevideo’s spirit. It is a spirit of progress and hope.
