What if clocks could whisper stories? Here at the Ithaca War Memorial – WW1 Obelisk, time speaks volumes. The Ithaca War Memorial – WW1 Obelisk isn’t just a clock tower. It’s a sentinel of remembrance, standing proudly in Paddington, Brisbane. This memorial, a unique structure in Brisbane, was born from the heartbreak and resilience of a community. In 1920, after the devastating toll of the First World War, the people of Ithaca, then a separate town, rallied together. They started fundraising for a memorial to honour their fallen. The Ithaca War Memorial – WW1 Obelisk, unveiled in 1922, became the poignant answer to their collective grief. The names of 130 local men, etched into the stone, whisper their stories of sacrifice. The clock, manufactured by the Synchronome Electric Company, was initially driven by a master clock in the nearby Ithaca Fire Station. Imagine the rhythmic tick echoing through the town, a constant reminder of the lives lost but not forgotten. The memorial’s location, Cook’s Hill, once a bare hilltop, offered an unobstructed view of the surrounding area. Today, mature trees frame the memorial, creating a tranquil setting. This park, initially the War Memorial Park, was later renamed Alexander Jolly Park. It honours the Ithaca Town Council landscape gardener who designed the park’s layout and contributed significantly to the town’s beautification. Alexander Jolly, a Scottish immigrant and dedicated horticulturalist, transformed the Ithaca townscape during his tenure. His work here at the Ithaca War Memorial – WW1 Obelisk is a testament to his vision and dedication. The Ithaca War Memorial – WW1 Obelisk is more than just stone and mortar. It’s a testament to community spirit, a symbol of remembrance, and a living tribute to the enduring power of hope. As you stand here, listen closely. The clock isn’t just telling time; it’s whispering stories of courage, sacrifice, and remembrance.
