Established in 1978, the ITESM – Escuela de Medicina has a rich history. Its story began with a vision to elevate medical education standards in Mexico.
In the mid-20th century, ITESM leaders recognized a decline in medical academic standards. They resolved to create their own medical school. Ignacio A. Santos, a Monterrey entrepreneur, donated the Hospital San José. This donation was pivotal. It provided the foundation for the new medical program. The school was named in Santos’ honor in August 1978. The first class comprised 27 students selected from 85 applicants.
ITESM is the most reputable private higher education system in Mexico. It has 31 campuses. The School of Medicine and Health Sciences expanded. It now offers programs like Physician and Surgeon, Biomedical Engineering, and Nutrition. Dental Surgery and Clinical Psychology are also offered.
The Ignacio A. Santos School of Medicine sponsors residency and fellowship programs. It offers positions in 18 fields. These include anesthesiology, general surgery, and pediatrics. Others are diagnostic radiology, cardiology, and urology. Fellowships are available in breast surgery and vascular radiology.
Accreditation matters. The school is accredited by the Mexican Association of Colleges and Schools of Medicine. It is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The first two years focus on basic sciences. These are mainly studied at Tec’s main campus. The phase of basic medical sciences occurs at the Hospital San José Tec Monterrey. Clinical sciences are taught in quarterly modules during the fifth and sixth years.
Admission to the ITESM – Escuela de Medicina is competitive. Applicants need high grades and a strong score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Shortlisted applicants undergo interviews. They submit recommendation letters and essays.
The main campus is next to the Hospital San José. Here, students attend classes from the second through fourth year. The fifth and sixth years involve rotations in various hospitals. These include the Zambrano-Hellion Hospital and state-owned hospitals. The Hospital San José was donated by Ignacio A. Santos. His goal was to advance cancer research and treatment.
The ITESM – Escuela de Medicina has strong links with other universities. This allows for rotations outside the Tec network. These include institutions like Johns Hopkins and Baylor School of Medicine. Other campuses, such as Campus Ciudad De México and Campus Guadalajara, also offer medical programs.
The Guadalajara campus has dedicated facilities. These support programs in medicine, biomedical engineering, and nutrition. The school has invested significantly in teaching facilities. The MD program includes clinical rotations. These rotations take place at the Centro de Retina Quirúrgico.
