Did the Italian Christian Church always go by that name? No. It once held a different moniker, reflecting its deep roots within the Italian-American community. It later became the Christian Assembly of the Bronx. This shift signified a broadening embrace, a welcoming of all nations to its doors, echoing the vision of Isaiah 56:7, “For My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.” The driving force behind this transformation was Pastor Steve Bavaro.
Pastor Steve, ordained in 1987, dedicated his life to the Italian Christian Church. He served in countless roles: elder, caretaker, youth leader, teacher, musician, and associate pastor. He worked tirelessly alongside his father, absorbing the wisdom and passion of generations past. After his father’s passing in 1998, Steve assumed the mantle of Senior Pastor. He also served as a presbyter for the Eastern District of IFCA, formerly the CCNA, starting in 2003. His love for music infused every service, the vibrant notes of his trumpet ringing through the sanctuary.
Pastor Steve’s background was as diverse as his ministry. With a Master’s degree in counseling, he had worked as a teacher and guidance counselor for the NYC Board of Education. This experience shaped his approach to ministry, enabling him to connect with individuals from all walks of life. He and his wife, Elizabeth, embodied the very essence of a “Pastor’s heart.” Their compassion and dedication touched the lives of countless individuals, guiding them towards faith and understanding.
The Italian Christian Church, under Pastor Steve’s guidance, wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a sanctuary for the community. A place where faith intertwined with music, education, and service. A testament to the enduring power of community and the vision of a house of prayer for all.
