These institutions merged on June 1 1999 forming the Department of Pharmacological Sciences.

The institute’s legacy includes the pioneering work of Professors Cervello Lazzaro Meneghetti Rebbeno Tocco and Santi. Later Pietro Benigno and Giovanni Cascio continued this tradition. Their research paved the way for future breakthroughs in various areas. These areas include cancer chemotherapy antibacterial research cardiovascular pharmacology and neuropsychopharmacology.

On December 17 2007 the Department was named after Professor Pietro Benigno. This honored his invaluable contributions and dedication to the field. He sadly passed away on September 28 2007. The Department was led by esteemed Professors Gaspare Cannizzaro Mario Palazzoadriano and Natale D’Alessandro. Their leadership guided the institute through significant periods of growth.

The Istituto di Scienze Farmacologiche has several research units. Each unit focuses on specific areas within pharmacology. One such unit is led by Professor Carla Cannizzaro. Her team focuses on the development of new antidepressants and anxiolytics. They also investigate stress response and cognitive decline. Other units study the molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in cancers.

The clinical pharmacology unit plays a critical role. It conducts pharmaco-vigilance and device-vigilance activities. It analyzes drug utilization and pharmacoepidemiology focusing on antibiotics heparin and proton pump inhibitors. It is the Sicilian Regional Center for advice and information on toxic effects of anti-cancer drugs. The unit is temporarily located at the Institute of Legal Medicine.
