Imagine Salzburg without the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Salzburg. It’s hard to picture. This community represents a resilient spirit and a history etched in both joy and sorrow. The Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Salzburg serves as the official representation for Jewish people in Salzburg, Steiermark and Kärnten. It is one of only five Jewish province communities outside of Vienna.
Let’s step back in time. The Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Salzburg was re-established after World War II. This occurred by decree of the Federal Minister for Education on August 4 1952. The Salzburg Kultusgemeinde holds one of three seats for province communities. These seats are within the six-member board of the Israelite Religious Society of Austria. The Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Salzburg ensures the religious needs of its members are met.
Now let’s talk about leadership. Kultusrat MMag Elie Rosen is the President. Born in 1971, this lawyer and business economist is a prominent figure in Austrian Judaism. Rosen’s dedication began in 1988. He prevented the demolition of the Baden bei Wien synagogue with his cousin Georg Chaimowicz. Rosen has been the President of the Jewish Community of Graz since 2016. He also served on the board of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien. Since 2012, Rosen has been the Vice President of the Federal Association of Israelite Cultural Communities of Austria. In January 2023, Elie Rosen became President of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Salzburg. He aims to expand religious activities and strengthen the community. Rosen seeks a strong presence for the Salzburg Kultusgemeinde in public life.
The Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Salzburg also has Dr Jehoshua Ahrens as Oberrabbiner. Born in 1978, he studied at several universities. Ahrens received his rabbinical training from multiple institutions. He has worked as a rabbi in Sofia, Zurich, Düsseldorf, Nuremberg and Darmstadt. In January 2023, he was accredited as Oberrabbiner of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Salzburg. Oberrabbiner Ahrens is engaged in Jewish-Christian dialogue.
Michael Kaner is the Kantor of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Salzburg. Born in Vienna in 1988, he grew up in a religious family. Kaner studied at a Yeshiva in Israel. He sang in the choir at Vienna’s main synagogue. Since 2023, President Elie Rosen brought him to the Synagogue Salzburg.
