The Rindfleisch massacres of 1298 and the Black Death pogroms of 1348 are just two examples. Expulsions in the 15th century and further pogroms in the 17th century severely impacted the community.
Despite these setbacks the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Bamberg persevered. Prominent rabbis such as Samuel ben Baruch founder of a renowned yeshiva and Moshe Mints a leading Talmudist enriched the community’s intellectual life. Rabbi Shimon Rosenfeld stands out. He was the first in Bavaria to deliver sermons in German a significant step towards integration. The community even flourished after the anti-Jewish boycott. This shows their remarkable strength.
