The Rindfleisch massacres of 1298 and the Black Death pogroms of 1348 are just two examples. Expulsions in the 15th century and further pogroms in the 17th century severely impacted the community.

Despite these setbacks the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Bamberg persevered. Prominent rabbis such as Samuel ben Baruch founder of a renowned yeshiva and Moshe Mints a leading Talmudist enriched the community’s intellectual life. Rabbi Shimon Rosenfeld stands out. He was the first in Bavaria to deliver sermons in German a significant step towards integration. The community even flourished after the anti-Jewish boycott. This shows their remarkable strength.

The synagogue housed precious ritual objects and forty Torah scrolls. Tragically on Kristallnacht the synagogue was burned down. Jewish homes were vandalized. Men were sent to Dachau. The once-large community dwindled. By 1939 only 418 Jews remained in Bamberg. The vast majority were deported. Only twelve survived the war. Their survival was likely due to marriage to non-Jewish Germans.

A memorial plaque stands today next to the site of the old synagogue and cemetery. After the war many Jews lived at a Bamberg DP camp. Following the fall of the Soviet Union many Russian Jews settled in Bamberg. Today the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Bamberg thrives. It has approximately 600 members. The community center includes a synagogue event spaces and classrooms. There is even a regularly open mikveh.
