Founded in October 1937 under Reverend Lamar V Brown’s leadership the Israelite Baptist Church stands before you. A small group of dedicated Christians started it all in a modest building on Dryades and St Andrew Streets. Years of hard work led them to acquire property on Melpomene and South Saratoga Streets. The congregation thrived under Reverend Brown’s guidance. He instilled the belief that even hell’s gates couldn’t prevail against their church. This faith fueled the rebuilding of their church in 1954.

The Israelite Baptist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a community hub. Reverend Brown’s passing in 1966 marked a transition. Reverend Mason Thompson took the reins. He continued Reverend Brown’s legacy of growth and faith. New property was purchased at 1500-1523 South Saratoga Street. The congregation’s dedication allowed them to pay off the property’s mortgage by 1968. Reverend Thompson’s tenure ended due to illness.

Reverend Israel Jones then led the church. He faced challenges keeping the dream alive. However their faith remained strong. The arrival of Reverend Martin Behrman Fortner in December 1969 brought a new era of growth. He emphasized prayer and faith. Under his leadership more property was acquired. A new edifice was built culminating in a dedication in August 1986. The Israelite Baptist Church saw a remarkable expansion under his 29 years of leadership.

Numerous organizations were formed during this time including a benevolent society deaconess boards choirs and more. Reverend Fortner’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of this church. His passing in 1999 didn’t end his impact. Reverend Emanuel Smith Jr. became pastor. He expanded the church’s community outreach with programs like feeding the homeless after-school tutoring and employment assistance. The church played a vital role in supporting its community members especially after Hurricane Katrina.

The Israelite Baptist Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith perseverance and community spirit of its members. It stands as a beacon of hope and resilience a symbol of a congregation that has faced challenges yet grown stronger. It’s a story of faith hope and community woven into the history of San Antonio.
