Who was İsmail Yaşar, and why does his name echo in this quiet corner of Nuremberg? Before you stands the İsmail Yaşar Plaque, a stark reminder of a life tragically cut short by hate. İsmail Yaşar, born in 1955, owned and operated a small snack bar, Scharrer Imbiss, right here in Nuremberg. He was a hardworking man, a father, a member of this community. His life, however, was brutally taken on June 9, 2005, a victim of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) terror group. The İsmail Yaşar Plaque serves not only as a memorial to his life but also as a symbol of the fight against racism and extremism. Yaşar was tragically murdered in his shop, shot five times in the head and upper body. The NSU, a neo-Nazi terrorist group, was responsible for a series of killings targeting immigrants across Germany. Initially, the police investigations focused on Yaşar’s personal life, wrongly suspecting connections to drug trafficking or organized crime. This misdirection allowed the true perpetrators to remain free for years, continuing their reign of terror. It wasn’t until years later that the truth came to light, revealing the horrifying extent of the NSU’s crimes and the systemic failures that allowed them to operate undetected. The plaque, with its inscription “Murdered by Nazis on 9.6.2005. No forgiving – no forgetting!” stands as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked hatred. Every year, Nuremberg holds a memorial event in Yaşar’s honor. In 2021, a street festival against racism was held to commemorate all the victims of the NSU. The square where the plaque stands was even renamed İsmail-Yaşar-Platz in 2022, a permanent tribute to his memory. A walnut tree, Yaşar’s favorite, was also planted nearby, a symbol of life and resilience in the face of tragedy. The plaque and the Platz are not just about remembering a victim. They are a call to action, a reminder to remain vigilant against the insidious nature of prejudice and to fight for a more just and equitable society.
