Craving a taste of paradise near Los Angeles? Here, just 100 miles from the city, lies a group of islands known as the Channel Islands. These are not the Channel Islands in the English Channel. These are the Santa Barbara Islands.

These Islands are a treasure. They offer adventure and stunning scenery. But the Islands are more than just pretty faces. The Channel Islands National Park encompasses five of the eight islands. These include Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara.

Imagine a place protected for generations. Here you can explore, learn, and enjoy. The Channel Islands are accessible year round. Each season brings unique experiences with weather shifts and wildlife changes.

Did you know the park has a marine sanctuary? It protects six nautical miles around the islands. Established as a National Park in 1980, it was first a U.S. National Monument in 1938. It became a Biosphere Reserve in 1976.

The islands teem with life. Isolation created unique species found nowhere else. The park spans 249354 acres. Half of that is underwater.

Are you a seafaring fan? You can enjoy beaches and diving. Boating between the islands is also an option. Land lovers will discover hiking trails on all five islands. Each island features a campground.

History buffs, listen up. The park has almost 13000 years of human history.

Anacapa Island is part of the Channel Islands National Park. So are San Miguel, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa Islands. Santa Barbara Island is also part of the park.

San Clemente Island is the southernmost island. The U.S. Navy owns it. It is used for tactical training. Civilians cannot access it. However, the waters are open for kayaking and diving.

San Nicolas Island is small and flat. The U.S. Navy owns it. It houses classified facilities. The island is not accessible. Divers target large spiny lobsters in its waters.

Santa Catalina Island is different. It has permanent settlements and tourist spots. Avalon is a resort town. Two Harbors is an unincorporated village.

The visitor center is in Ventura. The Channel Islands are waiting to be explored. Their remote location and ocean currents create incredible biodiversity. Towering kelp forests, caves, and coves offer some of the best diving.
