Gazing up at Island Spur, have you ever wondered about the stories etched into its slopes? Island Spur isn’t just a prominent ridge stretching from Cecil Peak towards Hidden Island in Lake Wakatipu. It’s a dramatic backdrop that has inspired architects and homeowners alike. The name “Island Spur View” perfectly captures the grandeur of this natural wonder. One particular home, designed by Ben Hudson Architects, showcases the ridge’s captivating presence. The clients, known for their love of entertaining, desired a home that blended social spaces with intimate retreats. Hudson’s design skillfully balances these needs, creating a space where communal cooking and dining take center stage. A chef’s kitchen anchors the home, flowing into a series of interconnected spaces perfect for gatherings. The architects prioritized the clients’ lifestyle, ensuring the home reflected their passion for hosting friends and family. While a north-facing orientation would have maximized sunlight, it would have come at the expense of the breathtaking mountain views. Hudson cleverly incorporated several outdoor spaces, allowing occupants to follow the sun throughout the day. A timber deck nestled between the stone-clad garage and an outdoor fire creates a cozy outdoor room. The west-facing living area opens onto a cantilevered balcony. This design invites residents to relax and soak in the late afternoon sun. Island Spur View, located in Jack’s Point, embodies the regional architectural identity. The exterior presents a collection of forms, each carefully integrated into the landscape. Locally sourced schist stone cladding welcomes guests into a grand hall, dividing public and private spaces. In the public wing, a double-sided, glass-enclosed wine “library” hints at the clients’ hospitality background. The space then opens into a spacious open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area, all focused on the magnificent Island Spur. A large gabled window frames the view, seamlessly connecting the interior with the mountain scenery. Extending from the living area is a sun-drenched north-facing deck with an outdoor fire, ideal for cozy evenings with loved ones. The two-story bedroom wing, along with an office and media room, is discreetly tucked into the hillside. Island Spur View’s exterior features a minimalist palette of Glenorchy schist, vertical shiplap timber, glass, and charred larch accents, grounding the home in its surroundings. Inside, warm oak flooring, dark-stained timber joinery, and Italian stone create a rich and inviting atmosphere. Meticulously detailed joinery and indoor and outdoor fireplaces contribute to the home’s cozy ambiance. The heart of the home is the kitchen, a space designed for sharing. The cooktop is positioned so the owners can face their guests while cooking, and a hidden home bar is readily accessible. Island Spur View is more than just a house. It’s a testament to the power of architecture to tell a story and create a space uniquely reflective of its owners.
