It began in the late 1960s, a humble gathering of Muslim students and families, meeting in each other’s homes. The first Eid was celebrated in a founder’s home. As the community grew, a place was needed. It wasn’t easy. Finding a location was a challenge for the young society, but they persevered. Now, the Islamic Society of Greater Houston represents 21 communities across the greater Houston area. It’s a testament to the power of community and the commitment to faith that has guided its growth for decades. It’s more than just a mosque. It’s a place of learning, a place of service, a place where people come together, not only to pray, but to learn. Here, you’ll find Islamic education classes for adults and children, a hifz program where students memorize the Quran, health clinics, social services, and weekend Islamic schools. There is a sense of togetherness in the air, a spirit of belonging that draws people in, and makes them feel welcome.
