In March 2007 the Islamic Society of Bosniaks in Utah officially registered in Salt Lake City. This vibrant community began its journey. The Maryam Mosque opened May 19 and 20 2017. The mosque courtyard has a sebilj. This is a water fountain like the Baščaršija sebilj in Sarajevo. Currently Amir-ef. Salihovic serves as the imam. The mosque’s name Maryam is significant. It reflects a shared belief with Christians. The reverence for the Virgin Mary. The mosque started as a former Baptist church. The Bosnian community bought it in 2010. They transformed it into a beautiful mosque with a minaret domes an iron fence and a large patio.
The grand opening was a celebration. There was music traditional Bosnian food and tours. The event showcased the community’s culture and hospitality. The Islamic Society of Bosniaks in Utah strives to present Islam and their Bosnian heritage in the best possible light. They aim to show love and respect to everyone regardless of background. The mosque is a place of worship and cultural gathering. A wonderful addition to Salt Lake City’s diverse communities. Many Bosniaks came to Utah as refugees. They fled the 1990s Balkan wars. More than 7000 Bosnian refugees and their families now call Utah home. Despite cultural differences with other Muslims all observe the five pillars of Islam. Even though home languages vary prayers are conducted in Arabic. The Islamic Society of Bosniaks in Utah is a testament to faith community and resilience.
