“An exceptional Islamic icon” is how some describe it. The Islamic Institute of America in Dearborn Heights stands as a testament to community spirit and faith. Its journey from a vision to a vibrant reality is a story worth telling.

The Islamic Institute of America’s story began with a pressing need. The Muslim community in the Detroit area sought a comprehensive center. This center would cater to their religious and social needs. In 2017, the Islamic Institute of America was established. It quickly became a vital hub for the community.

Sayed Hassan Qazwini, the imam of the Islamic Institute of America, envisioned a state-of-the-art center. It would welcome Muslims from all backgrounds. To achieve this vision, a plan was devised in 2021 to relocate the center. The original location on Ford Road faced traffic and parking issues.

An Arab American businessman offered a solution. He donated a seven-acre property on Beech Daly Road. In exchange, the Islamic Institute of America would sell its Ford Road location. This was an ideal opportunity. The new property was centrally located. It was perfect for building a larger, more accommodating facility.

The new Islamic Institute of America headquarters is an expansive 58,000 square feet. It includes a large prayer hall. This hall can accommodate 1,000 people. There is ample parking for 500 vehicles. A spacious event hall can host 1,000 guests. An Islamic school with 24 classrooms will educate future generations. The facility also includes a mortuary and a unique religious seminary.

The Islamic Institute of America’s design incorporates traditional Islamic architectural elements. Two large domes adorn the main building. Two high minarets stand beside them. These features evoke the spirit of mosques in the Arab and Islamic worlds. The goal was to create a distinct Islamic identity.

Education is at the heart of the Islamic Institute of America’s mission. The seminary offers in-person and online classes. Over 600 students from 12 countries participate. The curriculum is designed to address the challenges faced by Muslim generations in America. Graduates receive accredited certificates. These qualify them to serve in Islamic centers across the country.

The Islamic Institute of America embraces inclusivity. It welcomes people of all races and religions. The center hosts visitors and guests from diverse backgrounds. This includes Arabs, Indians, Afghans, Pakistanis, and Americans of various faiths. The Islamic Institute of America openly addresses questions about Islam.

The Islamic Institute of America provides a welcoming space for everyone. The center includes a special ablution area for Sunni Muslims. This reflects the administration’s commitment to inclusivity. The Islamic Institute of America aims to be a center for all Muslims.

The Islamic Institute of America’s focus extends to the youth. The new facilities will offer Islamic classes on weekends and during the summer. An Islamic library, bookstore, and cafeteria will be available. A dedicated study area with free internet will support students.

As you stand before the Islamic Institute of America, consider its purpose. It is a beacon of faith. It is a place of learning and community. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Islam in America. The Islamic Institute of America invites all to witness its beauty. It welcomes everyone to share in its mission of education, unity, and service.
