In 1995, a dream took root in Dearborn. A group of Muslims, led by Imam Ali Elahi, founded the Islamic House of Wisdom. The Islamic House of Wisdom started modestly on Schafer Avenue in Dearborn. Today, it stands as a testament to their vision on Ann Arbor Trail in Dearborn Heights. The Islamic House of Wisdom isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub, a beacon for the community, serving as one of the largest and most influential religious centers in the Detroit metropolitan area. The Islamic House of Wisdom’s doors are open to all, regardless of ethnic background. Inside, you’ll discover a prayer hall for quiet reflection. There’s also an auditorium that can host lectures for up to 1000 people. A nursery cares for about 40 children daily. A media center allows for live broadcasts. Offices, meeting rooms, a bookstore, a library, a kitchen, and a social hall foster connection and community. The Islamic House of Wisdom also features a ten-unit school. Currently, it’s used for weekend classes. But the vision is to transform it into a full-time Islamic educational institution. A guest house next door welcomes visiting religious leaders and scholars. The Islamic House of Wisdom is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of action. The center plays a vital role in interfaith dialogue. It’s a resource for those seeking knowledge on Islamic issues. Imam Elahi, a central figure at the Islamic House of Wisdom, has been instrumental in local interfaith activities. The Islamic House of Wisdom offers support to Detroit’s Middle Eastern community, providing counseling and aid with legal and immigration issues. The center also encourages Muslim foster parenting. It has even hosted a seminar on the topic. Imam Elahi himself was the first Muslim foster parent in Michigan. The Islamic House of Wisdom is a voice in local politics. It has opposed legalized gambling and physician-assisted suicide. The center has also taken a stand against discrimination. Through international conferences, the Islamic House of Wisdom strengthens the Muslim community. It hosted the Symposium of Islamic Scholars and seminars focusing on the future of Shia Islam.
