Did you know that the Islamic Center of America boasts a fascinating history? Standing before you is a testament to faith resilience and community. It’s not just a mosque it’s the largest in North America and the oldest Shia mosque in the United States.

The Islamic Center’s story begins in the 1940s with a growing Muslim community in Detroit. Imam Mohammed Jawed Chirri arrived from Lebanon in 1949. Internal disagreements sadly led to his departure in 1950. But the call to prayer was too strong. He returned in 1954. He became the leader of the newly formed Islamic Center Foundation Society. Building a new religious center was a huge challenge. Thankfully contributions from President Nasser of Egypt community support and loans helped. Michigan’s first mosque built specifically as a mosque opened its doors on September 20 1963. It was located on Joy Road in Detroit.

This initial space quickly became too small. By 1967 the Islamic Center had already outgrown it. Construction began on a new larger center on Ford Road in Dearborn. This was near the Muslim American Youth Academy a grade school the Center already operated.

The magnificent new 120000 square foot mosque opened in May 2005. Its impressive design includes two 110-foot minarets. Glazed brick decorates two domes and the central mosque. The building is not just a place of worship. It houses a large meeting hall an industrial kitchen offices and a library. The spacious prayer room comfortably accommodates 1000 people.

The Islamic Center of America isn’t just for Shia Muslims. Sunni Muslims and people of all faiths are welcome. It’s a place of unity and understanding. Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini took over leadership in 1997 after Imam Chirri passed away. He served as religious leader for eighteen years. The Islamic Center of America has consistently served the Detroit area. It also plays an important role in the broader United States. It’s a vital part of the community. Its mission is to provide comprehensive Islamic services and education. It strives to promote understanding and networking with all communities.
