Ever wondered how hundreds of islands could spring up in a lake? Welcome to Isla Hasbari, part of the Isletas de Granada. These unique islets boast a fascinating origin story.

The Isletas de Granada are a group of 365 small islands. They are scattered about the Asese peninsula in Lake Nicaragua. Imagine this: Thousands of years ago, the Mombacho volcano violently erupted. The eruption blew much of its cone into the lake. This cataclysmic event created the archipelago we see today.

Most of Isla Hasbari and the other islets are covered in lush vegetation. They are rich with diverse bird life. The islands are not just beautiful natural formations. Many are occupied. Some are privately owned and feature homes or vacation houses.

You might be surprised to find facilities for both residents and tourists. Hotels and shops are established on some islets. Boating tours are readily available.

There is also a fort on the islets. The fort of San Pablo was built to protect Granada from pirates in the 18th century. San Pablo Fort witnessed battles during the Colonial Period.

Isla Hasbari also has a more recent history. During Somoza’s dictatorship, many residents were forced to relocate to the mainland in the 1990s. Members of Somoza’s National Guard forced locals to sell their islands. After the Sandinista revolution, many islands were returned to their previous owners. By 1990, when the Sandinistas lost power, land titles had yet to be provided to the residents. The islands were returned to family members of the original National Guard who had “confiscated” the islands. Some of these islands have been sold to wealthy Nicaraguans and foreigners. This resulted in an uncertain future for the local Nicaraguans who have traditionally lived on the islands and nearby peninsula.

The islets of Granada are a testament to nature’s power and human history. Isla Hasbari shows both natural beauty and complex social dynamics. These small islands encapsulate centuries of Nicaraguan heritage. They reflect volcanic origins, colonial struggles, and modern-day challenges.
