Four million years old. That’s how long Isla Española has stood guard over the Galapagos. Imagine that. Millions of years of waves crashing against its volcanic shores. Millions of years of sun baking its unique landscape.

Isla Española. The southernmost jewel in the archipelago’s crown. It’s a place where time seems to slow. Where the rhythm of nature dictates the day. It’s also one of the oldest islands. Geologists believe its formation began millions of years ago. A shield volcano rising from the ocean floor. Its caldera long since eroded leaving a relatively flat island. One of the flattest in the whole Galapagos chain.

Today Isla Española is a haven for wildlife. A unique blend of endemic species. The Española mockingbird. The Española lava lizard. And most famously the waved albatross. Nearly the entire world population of these magnificent birds breeds here. From April to December these incredible creatures dance on the cliffs. Their awkward waddles and honking calls a stark contrast to their aerial grace. Witnessing their flight is breathtaking. They launch themselves from the cliff edges. Soaring effortlessly on the wind. Many for the first time in December. They then leave to fish before returning. It’s a truly unforgettable sight. A sight that has drawn scientists and conservationists. Their work has been crucial.

The Española giant tortoise. Another incredible conservation success story. In the 1960s only fourteen individuals remained. But thanks to the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galapagos National Park. A breeding program was established. This program helped bring the species back from the brink of extinction. Nearly two thousand young tortoises were released back onto Isla Española. They are thriving.

Española also boasts two visitor sites. Punta Suarez is a wonderland of wildlife. Sea lions lounge on the rocks. Marine iguanas bask in the sun. Galapagos hawks circle overhead. Española mockingbirds fearless and inquisitive often land on visitors. Three species of Darwin’s finches are also present. The sheer diversity is overwhelming. At Punta Suarez you’ll also find a dramatic blowhole. Ocean water explodes into the air. A natural geyser at high tide.

Gardner Bay is another highlight. A long white sand beach. It’s the longest in the Galapagos. This beach offers a chance to relax. Sea lions share the beach. You can swim or snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. Green sea turtles can be spotted here too. They come to nest between January and March.

Isla Española a land untouched by human settlement. A vibrant ecosystem. A testament to nature’s power. Its remote location. This isolation has fostered a unique evolutionary path. A journey to Isla Española is a step back in time. A journey into the heart of the Galapagos. It is an experience that will remain with you long after you leave.
