Once a sleepy fishing village called Sempit Puteri or “narrow princess,” Iskandar Puteri now bursts with vibrant life, a modern metropolis on the edge of bustling Johor Bahru. Today, we stand at a crossroads, not of mere roads, but of history and modern development. The city grew out of a vision, as big as the Straits of Johor it faces, to create a world-class urban center. You see it everywhere, from the sleek high-rises of the Medini district to the theme park magic of Legoland. The original name, Nusajaya, echoed the ambitions for the city. It meant “Land of Prosperity”. In 2016, the name was changed to Iskandar Puteri after Sultan Iskandar of Johor, reflecting the deep respect for the royal family and the proud history of the state. Iskandar Puteri is more than steel and glass though. Its roots run deep in the soil of this land. It is a city where old and new meet, where the gentle rhythm of the Straits of Johor echoes the pulse of modern life. Just a few decades ago, the area was dotted with fishing villages, their quiet lives revolving around the tides and the bounty of the sea. The Orang Laut tribe, known for their lives on the water, called this place home. But in the history of Iskandar Puteri, perhaps the most fascinating story begins with Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim, the first Temenggong of Johor, He won the Johor throne in 1855 and moved the capital from Telok Blangah in Singapore to Tanjung Puteri. It was renamed Iskandar Puteri. From a quiet fishing village, the story of Iskandar Puteri has just begun. Today, it is not just a modern city, but a symbol of growth, a testament to the vision that brought together history, culture, and progress.
