How did a messianic leader find refuge in this very Isenburger Schloss?

Right before you stands the Isenburger Schloss a Renaissance gem in Offenbach am Main. Its history is rich and layered like the very walls surrounding us. Originally a medieval water castle built in 1394 it was later rebuilt by the Counts of Isenburg in the 16th century. The Isenburger Schloss we see today was completed in 1559. Sadly a devastating fire in 1564 destroyed much of the original structure. The impressive south facade with its elegant galleries dates from this period of reconstruction.

The Isenburger Schloss played a significant role during the Thirty Years’ War. King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden resided here attempting to persuade the Frankfurt city council to surrender. It was more than just a royal residence. The Isenburger Schloss served as the seat of power for the Counts and later Princes of Isenburg-Offenbach from 1628 to 1711. It hosted historically important congresses including a meeting in 1741 focused on reforming the imperial constitution.

But the Isenburger Schloss harbors a less-known secret. Prince Wolfgang Ernst II zu Isenburg and Budingen a man known for his tolerance toward religious dissenters offered sanctuary to a controversial figure Jakob Joseph Frank. Frank a leader of the Frankist movement a messianic sect within Judaism had faced persecution and excommunication. He found refuge in this very castle. He lived here with approximately 400 followers presenting themselves outwardly as Polish exiles. Frank remained at the Isenburger Schloss until his death in 1791. His daughter Eva continued to reside there until 1816.

The Isenburger Schloss wasn’t just a home to royalty and religious reformers. The landscape and historical painter Leopold Bode maintained an atelier within its walls from 1883 onward influencing his artistic creations. The building’s history is further intertwined with the lives of countless Offenbach residents. From 1956 to 1997 it housed a youth center. It provided a space for meetings activities and cultural events etching itself into the memories of generations.

The Isenburger Schloss is not simply a historical relic. It now stands as part of the campus of the Offenbach University of Art and Design. The building showcases both its resilience and its continuing role in shaping art and culture. The Isenburger Schloss truly is more than a castle it’s a living testament to history.
