Slipping through the heart of Hamburg, the Isebekkanal whispers stories of a bygone era. This isn’t just any canal. The Isebekkanal is a three-kilometer-long waterway, a watery ribbon winding its way through the vibrant city. It’s a remnant of the Isebek stream, once a vital part of Hamburg’s landscape. The name, Isebek, means “iron stream,” a nod to the high iron content of its waters. This iron, it’s believed, originated from a small tributary that carried the mineral from the Langenfelde meadows. Originally, the Isebek flowed from its source near Bahrenfeld into the Diebsteich pond, eventually reaching the Alster. Today, street names like Isebekstraße and Isebekstieg serve as reminders of this original course. The modern Isebekkanal starts near the Eimsbütteler Christuskirche. It receives a small inflow from the pond in Eimsbütteler Park via the mostly underground Ottersbek stream. The Isebekkanal then flows through the quarters of Eimsbüttel, Hoheluft-West, Hoheluft-Ost, Harvestehude, and Eppendorf before finally joining the Alster. Along the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer, often called “Kaifu”, the Isebekkanal becomes a hub of activity. Joggers and walkers enjoy the scenic route. The Kaifu-Bad, a public open-air pool, offers a refreshing escape. This area is a popular spot, not just for recreation, but also for its historical significance. In the 1960s, plans to replace the Isebekkanal with a highway sparked public outcry. A citizen’s initiative, “Rettet den Isebekkanal!” (Save the Isebekkanal!), fought tirelessly to protect it, ultimately succeeding in preserving this urban oasis. Today, the lushly planted banks of the Isebekkanal stand as a testament to their efforts. Even the fish in the Isebekkanal have a story to tell. Carp, tench, bream, orfe, roach, rudd, pike, zander, asp, ruffe, and perch all call these waters home. Accustomed to being fed by passersby, they’re known to surface readily for a piece of white bread. So, as you stand by the Isebekkanal, take a moment to appreciate its journey. From an iron-rich stream to a beloved urban waterway, its story reflects the resilience and spirit of Hamburg itself.
