Picture this. You are standing in Irishtown Dublin. A place steeped in history a place where the echoes of centuries whisper on the wind.

Irishtown a Dublin suburb lies south of the River Liffey. It sits between Ringsend and Sandymount east of the River Dodder. This unassuming area holds a captivating past. A past that speaks to the complex relationship between Ireland’s native Gaelic population and its English rulers.

For centuries before 1454 Dublin was a Viking city. Then an Anglo-Norman army seized it. Dublin became the centre of English rule in Ireland. The native Gaelic Irish were seen as outsiders. Suspicion grew. Raids by the O’Byrne and O’Toole clans from Wicklow fuelled this suspicion. By the 15th century Gaelic migration worried the English authorities. They feared the English language and culture would become a minority.

So a drastic decision was made. The Irish inhabitants were expelled from Dublin in around 1454. This expulsion followed the Statutes of Kilkenny. They were only allowed to trade inside the city by daylight. At the end of the day they would leave. They set up camp outside the city walls. This became Irishtown the place where Dublin’s Irish community found refuge.

Irishtown wasn’t just a place of exile. It became a vibrant hub. Its life thrived. The Waxies’ Dargle a well-known annual outing by Dublin cobblers known as waxies took place here. A folk song keeps the memory alive. Irishtown also saw tragedy. In 1794 Richard Power a judge facing corruption charges drowned himself in the river. His act marked a dark moment in Irishtown’s story.

Irishtown became part of Pembroke Township in 1863. It became an urban district in 1899. Finally in 1930 it was incorporated into Dublin city. Today a quieter chapter unfolds. Irishtown Nature Park a small haven with walking trails runs along the Poolbeg Peninsula. Here nature and history intertwine offering a peaceful respite from the city’s hustle and bustle.

So as you stand here in Irishtown remember the stories held within these streets. Remember the resilience of its people. Remember the struggle and the triumph. Remember the layers of history that make Irishtown what it is today a vibrant and historic place.
