Picture the scene. You stand at the entrance to Irish Town Gibraltar. A vibrant street bustling with life. This isn’t just any street. It’s a place steeped in history. A place with secrets whispered on the wind.

Irish Town is one of Gibraltar’s most important streets. It runs parallel to Main Street. It stretches from Cooperage Lane in the north to John Mackintosh Square in the south. Originally called Calle de Santa Ana it held a hermitage. The Mercedarian Fathers built a monastery around it in 1581. This became known as the White Cloisters. It housed an order dedicated to ransoming Christian captives. The Cloister Building now stands on this site.

The name Irish Town is a mystery. Many believe Irish merchants lived here. However records from 1749 and 1777 show no Irish names. It’s more likely linked to an Irish regiment stationed nearby perhaps in the White Cloisters. One 18th-century visitor described it as a street of ill repute. This suggests the women working there may have been connected to the regiment. While many believe most residents were Irish this is untrue. In reality the majority were Welsh.

The Royal Gibraltar Police’s Central Police Station stands at Irish Town’s southern end. This red-brick Gothic building was designed by Walter Eliot. It opened on July 7 1864. The building housed the police until 1984.

Irish Town’s history is rich. It has seen convents and barracks. It was a center of trade and commerce. It has also been a place of entertainment and intrigue. Now a pedestrian area it still pulses with a vibrant energy. A fascinating mix of old and new.

Walk down Irish Town. Feel the echoes of centuries past. You are walking a street that has witnessed history unfold. You are walking in the footsteps of soldiers merchants and sailors. You are walking through layers of time. A living testament to Gibraltar’s enduring spirit.
